East coast racers face a daunting trek to Bonneville each
year. But at least Speed Week is a week long. Travel out to
the monthly El Mirage meets is even more daunting and most
of the meets are one day only. Half a day, usually, with
the prospect of only getting one run.
As an alternative to dry lake racing, these racers have set
up a track at an airport with a bit over a mile of run-up
to the timing traps. This venue is similar to that at
Goliad (Texas Mile) but a bit more structured for land
speed racers, I think. My impression is that they use the
SCTA rulebook and class structure and that they run tech
inspection like they mean it. Check them out at ECTA.
I hope to make the trek to North Carolina in April 2010. I
should be competitive in their D/PRO class now that I've
fixed the transmission.
